What a beautiful place--and an intriguing look at the paths less traveled! The more I read your posts, the more I realize how wise you are about exploring the outdoors, as well as encouraging and thoughtful. This is precisely the "voice" I'd like to hear when taking a hike to a new wild area. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in such an interesting way!

Great recap and suggestions from and for an amazing place! On our last trip, we bushwhacked in to a remote lake following game trails and compass readings. The pike fishing there was unbelievable! I have a few shots from that trip on my Isle Royale Pinterest board at https://pin.it/1awYTylF4

That sounds incredible! On my first trip, I met a woman who had gone bushwhacking and missed her turn to get up the ridge in a good spot and instead had to slog through a beaver pond for a couple miles. When I saw her, she was quite dirty (even compared to all the other backpackers)!

I love hearing about your visits to Isle Royale and thinking about how to plan visit to new parks. We tend to be nibblers so that the trips stay fun for our kids at this stage. So we'll pop in for a passport stamp and a nature trail/scenic drive. Next time, we'll camp or do something we missed last time. And we'll all be older and be able to make more connections each time.

Those “nibbles” are so much fun because they let you find out what it is about a park that sparks your interest! Then in the future, you already have an idea of what will make it a good trip for you, instead of just relying on the Top 10 spots in a guidebook. Though I feel this internal urge to see everything the first time I visit a place, I’m much happier revisiting in little bits and pieces, some familiar and some new—that’s how I’ve been exploring the North Shore of Minnesota over the past few years!
